MPYC runs an annual adult learn to sail programme courtesy of a great group of volunteers from our senior membership.
Following the successful completion of the 2025/2026 programme we are now taking expressions of interest for the 2026/2027 season*.
* The dates for the 2026/2027 course are still to be determined but will likely run between late August/ early September and mid October/early November. We will be in contact in early July with confirmed course dates and to gather registrations.
Information
Our course comprises nine days in total: two introductory days on a trailer yacht, one day of onshore theory, and six days of on-water tuition in a Laser dinghy.
The aim of our course is to give you the skills to sail a dinghy from A to B in any direction with confidence. The course is mostly practical; we’ve minimized the theory beyond what is needed to teach you to handle the boat.
For the six days tuition on the water, we use a dinghy commonly known as a LASER fitted with a small sail. To be able to handle this dinghy you will need a reasonable level of fitness and agility as the dinghy will capsize occasionally and you will have to be able to right the boat and pull yourself back into the cockpit. This is like the effort required to pull yourself out of a deep swimming pool without the using a ladder.
